May 01, 2024
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7
Today, we're starting a journey to confront the worry, anxiety, and fear that often steals our peace and joy. We are not alone in this struggle, with over 40 million Americans suffering from some form of anxiety, it’s time we took a long hard look at our beliefs. There is hope, strength, and healing to be found through faith.
If you are like me, you struggle with worry and anxiety everyday. What is the difference between the three, worry, anxiety, and fear? We often use them interchangeably, but there is a difference between all three.
Worry begins with our thoughts, believing that something will not go well. This is where anxiety and fear begin. When we continue to entertain the thoughts, obsessing over real or perceived threats, anxiety sets in. Anxiety often leads to physical symptoms and/or patterns of avoidance. Fear, on the other hand, is an unpleasant emotion that is caused by the belief of a perceived threat happening right now. Fear often causes a fight or flight response in our body.
In today’s blog, we will dive into the 5 health risks of worry, anxiety and fear. We will discover 5 incredible benefits of facing these challenges and explore 9 faith-driven ways to overcome them. All rooted in the wisdom of God’s Word.
5 Health Risks of Worry, Anxiety, and Fear
Worry, anxiety, and fear can wreak havoc on our physical and emotional well-being. Chronic anxiety can lead to high blood pressure, weakened immune systems, and even heart issues. We should not underestimate the threat it poses to our overall health.
❌ Physical Health: Chronic anxiety and fear can take a toll on our bodies. Consistently, high levels of stress hormones can lead to health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, and a weakened immune system. It’s like carrying the weight of worry in your body. Proverbs 12:25 tells us, “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.”
❌ Well-being: Prolonged anxiety can cause depression and damage our emotional health and relationships. When you’re preoccupied with anxious thoughts, you may not be fully present for your loved ones. This can make them feel neglected and unimportant. Psalm 34:17-18 reminds us that God can deliver us from all our troubles, including fear and
anxiety. It says, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
❌ Sleep Disorders: Anxiety and fear often disrupt our sleep patterns, leading to fatigue and other health issues. Sleep disruption can lead to mood swings and increased irritability. You may feel more anxious, frustrated, or even sad when you’re sleep-deprived. Psalm 4:8 tells us of the peace we can experience when we fix our eyes on God. “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
❌ Digestive Problems: Anxiety can lead to digestive issues, such as IBS and other discomforts. The gut-brain connection means that your emotional state directly impacts your digestive health. While Proverbs 17:22 doesn't talk about digestion, it emphasizes the relationship between emotional well-being and physical health. It says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”
❌ Compromised Spiritual Connection: When worry and anxiety grips us, it's challenging to hear God’s voice and feel His presence. Our connection with Him weakens, leaving us spiritually adrift. This spiritual disconnection leaves a void and can lead to feelings of spiritual emptiness. When we turn to God when ripped with fear and anxiety, He will give us strength. Isaiah 41:10 reminds us, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
5 Benefits of Facing Worry, Anxiety, and Fear
Confronting worry, anxiety, and fear is an opportunity for spiritual growth. It deepens our relationship with God and allows us to discover the inner strength we possess. Overcoming these challenges leads to improved health and stronger, more peaceful relationships. We also unlock our unique life purpose.
✅ Spiritual Growth: Confronting our fears with God by our side deepens our relationship with Him and strengthens our trust in His unwavering love. It allows us to experience His comforting presence on a deep level. Facing our fear with faith sharpens our ability to discern His guidance, teaching us to rely on His wisdom rather than our anxieties. 2 Timothy 1:7 encourages us, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
✅ Inner Strength: As we confront our fears, we discover the inner strength that God has given us. We tap into His power and resilience. This newfound inner strength empowers us to face life’s challenges with courage and grace. Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
✅ Better Health: By conquering the grip of fear, we pave the way for our bodies and minds to heal. Reduced stress and anxiety can lead to improved physical health, including lower blood pressure and a stronger immune system. Better health also results in more restful sleep. It reduces the risk of sleep-related health issues, ensuring we wake up feeling refreshed and ready to embrace each day. Psalm 147:3 reassures us, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
✅ Peaceful Relationships: When fear no longer controls us, our relationships flourish. We can love, support, and be present for those around us more effectively. We become better listeners and more empathetic partners and friends. Finding peace within ourselves creates an environment of trust, acceptance, and love in our relationships. We find it easier to live out Colossians 3:14, “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
✅ Living with Purpose: Overcoming fear and anxiety allows us to pursue the unique life purpose God has designed for each of us. The freedom from fear allows us to pursue our passions and dreams without the self-imposed limitations that anxiety can bring. We live life more intentionally. Jeremiah 29:11 liberates us, “For I know the plans I have for you, “declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
This breakdown helps us understand the challenge, the rewards, and how to move from anxiety and fear to peace and purpose. It’s a journey worth embarking on, my friend!
Now, you might wonder, how do we overcome these challenges? Here are 9 practical ways to let go of worry, anxiety, and fear for a better way of life and freedom.
9 Ways to Overcome Worry, Anxiety, and Fear
Each of these nine strategies offers a unique path toward conquering worry, anxiety, and fear. They show that faith, self-care, and support from a loving community are key elements of our journey to a more peaceful, purposeful life.
God created us unique and what works for me may not work for you. Choose a strategy from below that works for you. And for overachievers like me, you don’t have to do them all. Start with one and, once you have mastered that, add another.
🌟 Prayer: Pour out our fears in prayer, following the guidance of Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Prayer is our direct line of communication with God, and when we pour out our fears before Him, we allow His peace to flow into our hearts. It’s a sacred exchange of worries for divine comfort.
🌟 Meditation: Daily meditation on Scripture fortifies our heart and mind. Joshua 1:9 reminds us, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” As we focus on verses like this, they become sources of strength and courage, reminding us that God is ever-present on our journey.
🌟 Deep Breathing: Deep breathing exercises are a simple yet effective way to calm our minds and bodies. Practicing intentional breathing can help regulate stress levels and create a sense of calm. Psalm 46:10 reminds us to, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Adding deep breathing to our daily routine helps us manage anxiety and regain composure.
🌟 Journaling: Writing our fears and anxieties can be a cathartic experience. It allows us to externalize our inner struggles and gain clarity on the issues we face. Looking at them from a biblical perspective helps us align our thoughts with God's truth and counteract fear and anxiety. David wrote in Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Writing our thoughts and feelings reveals what’s in our hearts.
🌟 Forgiveness: Forgiveness is a powerful act of releasing the burdens of anger, resentment, and hurt. Colossians 3:13 urges us to “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Forgiving those who have caused us harm can be a liberating experience, freeing us from the chains of bitterness that anxiety can often fuel. We take a significant step towards emotional healing and restoration, allowing us to let go of the pain and fear that may hold us captive.
🌟 Exercise: Physical activities like hiking, paddle boarding, or running can lower anxiety and enhance well-being. These activities release endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. 1 Timothy 4:8 reminds us, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” This verse highlights the value of physical exercise and the importance of a balanced approach to overall health.
🌟 Healthy Diet: Nourishing our bodies with wholesome foods is self-care that aligns with the biblical principle of honoring the temple of the Holy Spirit. Eating healthy foods helps us deal with life's challenges, including fear and anxiety. When we enjoy good health, our soul is nourished, as assured by 3 John 1:2, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
🌟 Community: Surround ourselves with a supportive community. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reassures us: “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” Creating a supportive community helps us overcome fear and anxiety by reminding us we're not alone.
🌟 Professional Help: Seek the guidance from a Christian counselor or coach who can provide the support and tools we need. Proverbs 11:14 highlights the wisdom of seeking counsel, “For lack of guidance a national falls, but victory is won through many advisers.” This verse emphasizes the value of professional help in navigating our emotional and mental well-being.
Remember that we are not alone in this battle over fear and anxiety. God is with us every day, offering us His love, grace, and unwavering support. Together, we can choose faith over fear, my friend. May His love and guidance lead us to a place of peace and purpose.
To let go of our fears, we must first detach ourselves from them, which means cultivating a sense of self-awareness. Confronting your fears is one way to access the ability to transform and break away from them.
A great technique that can help you let go of fears once and for all is to examine the worst-case scenario for whatever you’re fearing.
1️⃣ To start, zero into precisely what your fear is. Try to narrow it down to a word or sentence if you can. This step can be very challenging, especially for those not used to confronting difficult emotions directly. The key to this step is to be open, aware, and honest with yourself.
2️⃣ Try writing your fears if you’re struggling to dissect them.
3️⃣ Next, imagine the worst-case scenario surrounding each fear. Sitting through the discomfort allows you to evaluate the situation's feasibility.
4️⃣ Finally, note how each fear makes you feel. Pay particular attention to where in your body you feel it. For example, you may experience tightness in your chest or nerves in your stomach. Over time, you will recognize this feeling so you can address your fear before it gets out of control.
Confronting our fears while in a ‘safe’ environment is the best way to strengthen us to combat them when they might arise in an unexpected situation. If doing this exercise on your own is too overwhelming, book a coaching session and we can walk through it together.
